Effect of Hot Water Extract of Salvia plebeia R. on the Production of Splenocyte Cytokines in Mouse

Abstract
This study examined the antioxidant and immuno-enhancement effects of Salvia plebeia R. For the antioxidant activities, the total polyphenol and, flavonoid contents were 99.10¡¾2.53 mg gallic acid equivalent/g and, 48.71¡¾1.06 mg catechin equivalent/g, respectively. 2,2¡Ç-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) and 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activities increased in a dose-dependent manner. The oxygen radical absorbance capacity was 109¡¾1.78 nm Trolox equivalent/mL. The levels of IL-2 and IL-12 cytokine production on C57BL/6 mice splenocytes (the FIE-SP group, 150 ¥ìg/mL) were significantly higher than the CON group. These results suggest that S. plebeia R. might increase the antioxidant activity, and immune-enhancement effect.
